The magic town of Tulum, located about 130 kilometers south of Cancun, is one of the destinations of Quintana Roo with the highest growth rates thanks to its white sand beaches, turquoise waters and beautiful landscapes that include cenotes, lagoons and imposing archaeological constructions, for this reason, the municipality of Tulum will become the first Sustainable Tourism Development Zone in Mexico.
According to the document issued by the Federal Ministry of Tourism, through the Undersecretariat of Planning and Tourism Policy, particularly of the General Directorate of Sustainable Tourism Planning:
“Based on the Article 3 Fraction XXI of the General Law of Tourism, Zones of Sustainable Tourism Development (ZDTS) are those fractions of the national territory, clearly located and delimited geographically, which by their natural or cultural characteristics constitute a tourist attraction. They will be established through a specific declaration issued by the President of the Republic at the request of the Ministry of Tourism.”
It is worth mentioning that, at the beginning of this year, the Secretariat of Tourism also had contemplated Isla Mujeres for the nomination of ZDTS. However, the provision of services, at a disadvantage with the increase in tourist infrastructure in the municipality of Tulum, tipped the balance towards this beach destination full of ancestral traditions.
